Pacific Rim National Park Reserve was established in 1970 to protect a nationally significant coastal environment. The Park offers three distinct areas for visitor interest - Long Beach, The Broken Group Islands and The West Coast Trail.

Each unit is accessed via a different route and provides excellent examples of old-growth coastal temperate rainforest, beaches and archaeological sites well worth exploring. Long Beach is a pleasant 10-minute drive north of Ucluelet UCMY Cabins Long Beach is a pleasant 10-minute drive north of Ucluelet. Here I found beaches and forest trails back-dropped by a 4,000 foot mountain range. Spectacular! This 48 square mile section is ideally suited for most visitors travelling by car. The most famous attraction of the Park appears to be its 30 kilometers or so of sandy beaches. In addition to beachcombing, surfing, tide pool and sand dunes exploration, I was able to learn about the open ocean through films, exhibits and displays at the Wickanninish Centre.

There are nine short self-guided walking trails in the Park, two of which are wheelchair accessible. Most trails offer brochures explaining the culture and heritage of the area. Even more can be gleaned from the guided outdoor events and indoor theatre programs at Green Point campground offered from late June to Labour Day.  www.dist.ucluelet.bc.ca
